CALLING OUT TO BE TOUCHED
A mix of stop motion, live action, graphic effects / sensually emotional content and intellectually stimulating subjects. Get lost with the Brothers Quay in a beautifully twisted world as they find expression in diverse genres.
MoMa is serving up the chills and thrills this August with a fascinating exhibit of work from internationally renowned American artists, the Quay Brothers. Their first major retrospective encompassing a full range of their work. The exhibit titled, Quay Brothers: On Deciphering the Pharmacist's Prescription for Lip Reading Puppets, incorporates an impressive amount of mediums; including animated & live action films, puppets, decor, drawings, paintings, graphic art, calligraphy work, installations, and never before seen early work.
Intellectually challenging and emotionally expressive, the renaissance twins, Timothy & Stephen, work as filmmakers, illustrators, and stage designers - to say the least - penetrating many fields of visual expression and reaching a variety of different audiences. Their work, inspired by exposure to radical 60's Polish graphic design & vanguard European cinema has aided in their unique aesthetic. On first viewing the duos work may seem obscure, even off putting. However, upon closer inspection the Quays have made work rich in reference and often humorous while rooted and riddled with meaning.

Highlights of the exhibit include the wonderful and incaptivating peephole installations, aptly titled Dormitorium, each displaying replicate environments and perspectives from the duos surrealist films. The elaborate lines and lettering of calligraphy is also present throughout the exhibit, as one of the Quay Brothers enduring elements. Equally charming are the documentaries on the subject of Anamorphosis, a challenging perspective technique used to create a distorted two dimensional image, that when viewed from a specific vantage point reveals a hidden image.
One of the many pleasures felt while visiting the universe of the Quay Brothers is viewing such an enchantingly unique and personal aesthetic. Challenging you as the viewer to discover, untangle, and determine hidden meaning a mast a world of death, decay, rebirth, and history.
