DO NOT
DISTURB

Sexy, racy, feminine, and provocative are the first four words that come to mind upon viewing Ellen von Unwerth’s new collection of work impeccably titled Do Not Disturb, on exhibit at Michael Hoppen Gallery in London.

Ellen, listed as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Fashion Icons, is known for her signature high fashion, sexually styled photographs and this collection undoubtedly showcases this. The decadently hued rooms of Los Angeles’s Madonna Inn set the scene for the femme fatale-like models. The combination of luscious lips, golden-blonde tresses of hair, exquisite lingerie, and the rich interiors of the rooms complement each other all too well.

IF LOOKS COULD
KILL

This weekend marked the third installment of the Fashion in Film Festival Series held at the fantastic Museum of The Moving Image. Supported by the London College of Fashion, this year the festival "explores the compelling links between cinema, television, fashion, crime, and violence. Tackling themes such as disguise, desire, and the corruption of beauty…"

The festival kicked off with screenings of such films as Desire, with the always iconic Marlene Dietrich, and the uber cool 1960's Italian film The 10th Victim. Fashion in Film will conclude this weekend with screenings of Ms. 45, Leave Her To Heaven, Mildred Pierce and more.

For the full schedule of screenings and discussion panels visit

JAPANESE COSTUME

FROM NIPPON TO PARIS

The Fondation Pierre Bergé | Yves Saint Laurent has devoted its 17th exhibition to the exquisite art of Japanese Kabuki costumes. The first exhibit of its kind held in Paris, the exhibit displays costumes accompanied by accessories, engravings, photographs, and documentary footage of Kabuki performances.

Kabuki, a form of classical Japanese drama, emerged at the beginning of the Edo period (1603-1868) and is still quite popular in Japanese culture. The costumes tend to be extravagant, sumptuous and colorful, contributing to the flamboyance of the show. Performances historically took place over the course of a whole day and are based on popular legends and characterized by striking costumes, highly stylized acting, impeccable keshô face paint, and the use of both male and female roles by male actors.

© Shochiku Costume Co, Ltd, Tokyo

The exhibition is divided in three parts. The first displaying costumes belonging to iconic Kabuki plays. The second, to costumes used for dance scenes and the last devoted to costumes manifesting certain special features. Iconic and inspiring, this offering of extravagant fashions will take you down the fantastic history of this avant-garde theatrical art form.

On view at Fondation Pierre Bergé | Yves Saint Laurent till July 15th

"Dressed Up Like A Million Dollar Trouper"

Renowned Hollywood Icon Gary Cooper was honored this week at the release party for powerHouse's new book Gary Cooper Enduring Style. Co-hosted at Leffot along with our long time favorite blogger, fashion guru Scott Schuman - The Sartorialist - Enduring Style focuses mainly on Cooper's signature style rather than his lengthy career in Tinsel Town.

"He conveyed a straightforwardness and an honest American handsomeness that seemed to both ignore and rise above the contrived glamour and studied posturing that had characterized so many other film heroes of those early years." writes powerHouse "No matter what costume he put on, he looked like he owned it. The camera loved him, and so did the box office."

BIRDS OF PARADISE
FASHION IN FILM FESTIVAL
AT THE MUSEUM OF MOVING IMAGE

This absolutely fabulous program explores costume and fashion in European and American cinema by focusing on episodes in cinema history which distinctly portray costume, adornment, and styling to create an eye pleasing sense of visual delight. Though the program had some what of a bumpy start it's opening night last week, the festival quickly picked up steam the rest of the weekend, with sumptuous screenings of silent films Secrets of the Orient, Male and Female, Kenneth Anger's Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, and the dream like Pink Narcissus.

This weekend looks to be just as delicious– full of visual displays of glamour and utter decadence. Kicking off tonight, the festival continues with a gender bending Steven Arnold Special, followed later this weekend with screenings of 1940's Cobra Woman and the program Drag Glamour. A must see.
Check out this weekends programs at BIRDS OF PARADISE.
