A RAPTUROUS ANIMATED
KALEIDOSCOPE

This Sunday a reconstructed bit of animation rarely seen, tremendously entertaining, and historically significant will screen at BAM. The Adventures of Prince Achmed, by pioneering, avant-garde, and often overlooked German filmmaker and female artist Lotte Reiniger, employs silhouetted black cardboard cutouts on illuminated glass to craft this dreamlike homage to The Arabian Nights.

Developed using stop animation and originally released in 1926, this special closing day event, hosted by BAMcinemaFest,  has enlisted two founding members of the Irish ambient rock band 3epkano's and avant-garde cellist Erik Friedlander to arrange and perform a new score as they find their muse in the oldest surviving animated feature film to date.

More than eighty years later, what's most surprising about The Adventures of Prince Achmed is still how extraordinarily beautiful it is. Just as it must have been for viewers back in 1926. Film director, Jean Renoir, son of the famous painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, is said to have been an early admirer of the film and instrumental in facilitating its general European release as a work of rare artistry and fluid beauty.

Screening Sunday / 6pm at BAM Rose Cinemas

EXPECTED TO LAUNCH
IN MILAN FOR FALL/WINTER 2011

The Tom Ford woman will no longer go nude– at least in TF ads. The designer is readying for his womenswear debut expected to launch for Fall 2011 and said to be mulling between showing in New York and Milan. The collection will launch with an exclusive presentation rather than runway blowout. WWD reports that he’s recently tapped Caroline Trixier of Givenchy for ready to wear, and Pablo Coppola for accessories, via Alexander McQueen.  We’re still waiting for the word on Alessandra Facchinetti and Carine Roitfeld– before we really get our groupie on.

Also on the launch agenda? Lipstick. Twelve Private Blend Lip Colors cased in packaging so perfect we’re already rationalizing the purchase. Why launch with twelve colors?  Via Mr. Ford, “I took the most universally flattering colors that a woman can wear, and then I reimagined them in a modern and authoritative way. These are signature lip colors for the makeup connoisseur.” We’re with him on the “there’s no more dramatic accessory than a perfect lip” philosophy. The lip collection will launch in Europe next month. Stateside, the decadent lipsticks will be available June 1st.  After the jump– a look at the TF branded lipstick.
