PHOTOGRAPHER KATSU NAITO IS SERVING SERIOUS REALNESS
THIS FRIDAY FOR THE LAUNCH OF HIS NEW BOOK
WEST SIDE RENDEZVOUS
Featuring 45 black and white prints, mostly portraits. West Side Rendezvous, finds Naito's lens focused on Transsexual and Transvestite streetwalkers of New York City's Meatpacking District in early the 1990's.
Amidst the shattered glass, graffiti, and desolate streets these intimate portraits remind us of a past almost completely washed away by the gentrification of the now super hip Meatpacking District.
A far cry from the glamour and freedom of the drag balls in the early 90's. West Side Rendezvous subtly brings to light the rough reality of this New York City subculture at the time.
The launch will have the artist himself at hand to sign copies and limited editions of 8 x 10 prints.
Friday Nov. 11th at Printed Matter, 195 Tenth Ave. and 22nd.
On the surface, it looks as though the White House couldn't handle Mrs. Desirée Rogers brand of modern, confident chic. The WSJ. cover and VOGUE PROFILE, the Comme des Garcons, Jil Sander, Basso & Brooke and Viktor & Rolf fashion statements, schmoozing front row with Anna Wintour at fashion shows, commissioning Simon Doonan for White House holiday decor. An unbashful fashionista. We're sad to see her go.
In politics, who knows what scandals lurk underneath the surface. But the news rooms do love a good scandal. And if there is anything behind the seemingly surface issue, we'll keep you posted.
RONG HANG RESTAURANT
FUJIAN DELICACIES ON ELDRIDGE
For the adventurous– this restaurant's a gold mine of cuisine obscura.
FOR THE DARING Go for the stomach– as in stir fried pork stomach, various fish stomach soups (one with watermelon) and conch tossed with goosefeet.
FOR THE FAINT OF HEART Try the Fujian classic lychee pork, the standard pan-fried noodles or the clams with fresh garlic sauce.
FOR THE VEGETARIAN Eggplant with garlic sauce casserole and sauteed-dried bamboo will delight and satiate even the most skeptical veggie eater.
"I’m 40 now, but I want this to be a company
that lives way beyond me, and I believe that customers
are more important in making that happen than press.
When I’m dead, hopefully this house will still be going.
On a spaceship. Hopping up and down above earth.”
The Alexander McQueen brand without Alexander McQueen at the helm is pretty much unfathomable. But as far as we know– he wanted his company to live on. And we can't bear to hear that Gucci Group may be ready to close up shop permanently. Below, a few suggestions on who could carry on the legacy– with one dark horse we're really gunning for and two new additions.
JACK WALLS / THE EBONY PRICK
OF THE WHITE ROSE'S THORN
Jack Walls’ handwritten lyrical prose piece “The Ebony Prick of the White Rose’s Thorn” is on exhibition at FUSE GALLERY and will be closing Saturday, February 6th, 2010. There will be a book signing from 6-8PM followed by a reading by the artist at 8PM.
A sprawling poem laid bare upon scores of sheets of Arches paper with a watercolor brush and scribed laboriously by Mr. Walls over the past two years. What Mr.Walls presents in “TheEbony Prick of the White Rose’s Thorn” is a surreal voyage through the darker recesses of the poetic jungle that is the sublime genius of the mind of Jack Walls. The prose piece, an epic swirl of hellish visions, disorderliness, and a brutal yet beautiful chronicle of a young nameless poet’s tragic blaze to ruin, is accompanied by sixteen found black and white pornographic images illustrating interracial homoerotic sex.
