A true delight to the senses and one of Hollywood's great excursions into surrealism, The Gang's All Here will be on view this week at Film Forum. Directed by innovative choreographer Bubsy Berkeley, this camp classic casts Carmen Miranda as the unforgettable Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat in the infamous musical number stemming straight from Freud. Which, if interpreted, could bring a rosy blush to countless cheeks.
Described as a "technicolor freak out" and "utterly deranged" this sense boggling movie is Berkeley's own special brand of fantasy; with realistic scenes morphing seamlessly into psychedelic displays of waving fruit, detached body parts, human kaleidoscopes, ridiculous shtick, and mind-boggling transitions.
LE CABINET DE CURIOSITIES SURPRISE OF THE UNEXPECTED
“In my mind, nothing is incompatible … it becomes about the surprise of the unexpected.” says Thierry Despont in regards to his fantastic exhibit Le Cabinet De Curiosities.
Located on the second floor of the former New York Mercantile Exchange, Despont's cabinet is a journey for the senses that must not be missed. Curated with antiques from Steinitz Gallery in Paris and artists from Marlborough Gallery, Despont's personal quest to document a dream world has come to reality.
Known mostly for his sumptuous interior and architectural work, Despont, also represented by Marlborough, is an established painter and sculptor. His massive paintings of planets hail strongly in the Astronomers Room while his whimsical sculptures, made of found objects incorporating antique elements, are placed throughout the exhibit creeping, leaping, lurking, and hanging from all corners leading you in and out of Despont's extravagant imaginary world.
On view till Wednesday February 29th Le Cabinet De Curiosities is something no one should miss. Do yourself a favor and just go!

ABEL FERRARA IN THE 21ST CENTURY AT ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES
Anthology has been devoted to showing the work of legendary American independent filmmaker Abel Ferrara for many years, and are presenting a series focusing on his work over the past decade. The financial and logistical challenges independent filmmakers face in pursuing their art have risen dramatically since the collapse of much of the infrastructure that had supported this realm of cinema throughout the 90s. But Ferrara has proven unstoppable, making movies some way, some how, no matter how daunting the obstacles. Fueled by his supernova-like creative drive, he and his group have willed into being five unforgettable films, each of them intensely personal, profoundly collaborative, and enormously entertaining. Anthology will be showcasing all of them together. For upcoming screenings head to ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES.

RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER'S WORLD ON A WIRE AT MOMA / APRIL 14-19 2010
“A very beautiful story that depicts a world where one is able to make
projections of people using a computer. And, of course, this leads to the
uncertainty of whether someone himself is a projection, since in the virtual world
projections resemble reality. Perhaps another, larger world has made us as
a virtual one? In this sense it deals with the old philosophical model,
which here takes on a certain horror.”

ELLEN VON UNWERTH / FRÄULEIN
AT / STALEY WISE GALLERY
THROUGH / JANUARY 30TH 2010
Ellen von Unwerth's latest exhibition at Staley Wise- FRÄULEIN– dazzles with a parade of girls who run the gamut from innocent to naughty. Sex is the forefront: fetishistic, humorous, romantic, decadent and erotic. Fashion and fantasy are combined in von Unwerth's vision of girls having fun; with us, with each other, and with the unseen viewer who they tease, taunt, and provoke. These photographs capture the female version of the sexual provocateur, not so much the object of list but the playful instigator.
